Alignment of a continuous casting line using measurement software

Aligning Continuous Casting Lines

Operators and manufacturers of continuous casting systems repeatedly face metrological challenges: To ensure consistently high slab quality, they must achieve high levels of accuracy. In addition, system downtime must be kept to a minimum to avoid costly production interruptions.

With HD LASr, we have developed specialized measurement software for continuous casting systems. It performs 3D measurements of rollers, copper plates, and the strand guide, handles alignment, and provides simple wear assessments. Integrating a digital twin of the plant allows for the optimal simulation and planning of all metrological processes. Thanks to its intuitive user interface, the measurement software can be operated entirely by your own staff after only a short training period.

This enables fully digital processing, which delivers significantly faster and more precise results compared to manual measurement.

SMS Group: Aligning Steel Mill Components

SMS group, a supplier of continuous casting systems, has relied on sigma3D’s wide-ranging expertise for years, both in the alignment of steel mill components and in the field of industrial software development.

In the past, SMS group relied on standard software to align molds and segments using a laser tracker. The problem: The metrology software was so complex that external specialists were required every time to perform routine measurement tasks. This cost the company time, money, and flexibility.

The solution: The sigma3D team developed measurement software, including a measurement concept, for the end customers’ steel mill personnel. After a brief training session, the plant operators were able to perform all measurement tasks independently. The result: The measurements became more accurate and reliable because human and technical sources of error were reduced to a minimum.

Quality Inspection with Database Integration for Steel Pipes

For quality inspection using laser trackers in the production of large-diameter steel pipes, our team developed the TubeSoft measurement software: With its help, plant personnel can precisely verify compliance with defect tolerances and automatically document the results in a connected database. The result is a detailed results file containing all measured values, including the parameters defined in the specification file.

Our metrology software guides users through a clearly defined measurement process, which they can perform independently after a brief training session. If adjustments to the process are necessary, settings can be modified via a password-protected expert access.

We first developed this solution for a Germany-based specialty manufacturer of large-diameter steel pipes. For similar applications, we can easily adapt the measurement program to your requirements and further customize it to meet your specific needs.

 

Specify the industrial robot base and tool

Wherever industrial robots are used in production, regular robot cell calibration—known as base measurement—is required to ensure consistently high-quality results.

We have developed our own measurement program specifically for this task: RoboCalc, a plug-in for our open-source software OpenIndy. For precision applications carried out using 3D measurement systems, the software helps establish the 6D relationship between the robot and the fixture. In addition to the robot base, the tool can be directly defined as well. Our team was able to draw on its extensive measurement experience in the automotive, aerospace, and plant engineering industries during the development process.

The plug-in is easy and intuitive for users to operate. The measurement software guides them step-by-step through all processes: measuring, calculating, and evaluating—including documentation and data export. This makes the measurement process completely digital. The result: Robot bases can be determined significantly faster and more accurately than with standard measurement software solutions from manufacturers.

Customized Solutions for Measuring Your Large-Scale Facilities

When developing measurement concepts for the construction of your large-scale plants, our team keeps all metrological requirements in mind from the very beginning. When planning the measurements in detail, we rely on so-called line-of-sight analyses: In the CAD model of your system, we plan collision-free instrument positions by drawing virtual lines to the measurement point and identifying potential obstructions caused by system components. You can process all CAD data using your own hardware and software, or have us provide it to you.

In addition, we provide you with templates for reporting and analysis—all from a single source—including VBA functions if needed. We deliver detailed, expert-reviewed documentation in both German and English.
